Bette O. Adelman, Esq., is the founder and sole shareholder of the Adelman Law Office, P.C. A Certified Specialist in Family Law, Arizona Board of Legal Specialization, and a former assistant attorney general for the State of Arizona, Ms. Adelman's practice is now entirely devoted to all aspects of domestic relations law. Her particular emphasis and special interests lie in complex child custody litigation and the establishment, enforcement and modification of child support. Ms. Adelman has actively served as a family law Judge Pro Tem in the Maricopa County Superior Court since 1993. In addition, she regularly accepts appointments to perform Settlement Conference Judge and mediator services in Maricopa County family law actions. She has been a frequent faculty presenter on a variety of family law related issues at continuing legal education seminars sponsored by the State Bar of Arizona, the Maricopa County Bar Association and a variety of other national and local law-related organizations. Ms. Adelman was recently recognized by Southwest Super Lawyers as being among the top 5% of attorneys in Arizona and New Mexico for her outstanding work in the area of family law. In 2006, Southwest Super Lawyers accepted nominations from more than 18,000 Arizona and New Mexico lawyers. Each nomination was then subjected to a rigorous peer selection process, including extensive balloting, blue ribbon panel review and investigation. Ms. Adelman was additionally honored by inclusion of her biography in Feminists Who Changed America 1963-1975 released in late 2006 and published by the University of Illinois Press. An active member of the State Bar of Arizona since 1986, Ms. Adelman also has been admitted to the District of Columbia Bar, United States District Court for the District of Arizona, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit and the United States Supreme Court. Appointed in 2006 to serve on the Arizona State Bar Association’s Board of Legal Specialization, she also is a member of the Maricopa County Bar Association’s Bench-Bar Committee and previously served on the Board of Trustees of the Maricopa County Bar Association Foundation. Ms. Adelman is a long-standing member of the American Bar Association and the State and County Bars' Family Law and Juvenile Sections and formerly participated in numerous other state and county bar association committees. Ms. Adelman, who earned her law degree from Arizona State University in 1985, attended Vassar College and received both her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts in Public Administration degrees from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Before entering law school, Ms. Adelman had a lengthy service in higher administration education, first as Associate to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, and later as Assistant to the President of the State University of New York College at Geneseo. Prior to engaging in private practice, Ms. Adelman served as an Assistant Attorney General in the Economic Security Division of the Arizona Attorney General's Office, and as staff attorney for Community Legal Services assisting indigent, off-reservation Indians at the Urban Indian Law Office. She also gained diverse experience in the areas of consumer law, criminal defense, bankruptcy and general civil ligitation while employed as an associate at a small private firm in Phoenix. For fifteen years, Ms. Adelman has routinely served as a judge in various moot court competitions at the Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law at Arizona State University. In the past, she has lectured at the School of Social Work at Arizona State University on subjects pertaining to domestic relations law, and has annually volunteered to conduct "Courthouse Experience" tours of the Maricopa County Courthouse for grade school children for the past fifteen years.
